The race of nomadic horse warriors known as the Scythians originated in the Black Sea area and spanned a period from around 700BC to100BC, throughout this period they maintained their independence and were never defeated in battle by any of the peoples they fought. These included the Persians, Greeks, Thracians and Macedonians.  They were heavily armed with lances, javelins, swords, maces, axes, shields, and the bow.  Their armies consisted of heavy noble cavalry and mounted archers, sometimes with contingent or foot warriors which might include subject levies.
